Web 2.0 Technology

What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is more than just accessing information on the Web.  It also allows "users to interact and collaborate with each in a social media dialogue" ("Web 2.0," n.d., para. 1).

Here are different examples of Web 2.0 tools ("Web 2.0:  Defined," n.d.).

Virtual assistants are considered Web 2.0 technology because they collaborate with other Web 2.0 tools.  Virtual assistants connect the user to...

  • Social Network Sites
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
  • Location Sites
    • Foursquare
  • Music Sites
    • Pandora
    • iTunes
  • Video Sites
    • YouTube
  • Customer Service Networks
    • Google
    • Yahoo

The websites listed above allow the user to network and interact with others.

Web 3.0 - The Future

What is the future for virtual assistants?  As of right now, the user can tell them what to do or ask basic questions:  create a reminder, add an event, call a friend, update a Twitter status, etc.  Virtual assistants are limited to user-computer interaction, which classifies them as Web 2.0 technology.

For example, if you ask Siri a question, "what time does Target open tomorrow?" - this is her response:

In the future, virtual assistants will be able to do more.  When I ask Siri "what time does Target open tomorrow?" - she will be able to give me a response.  Siri will be able to connect with the stores website and find out the information.  The capability for the virtual assistant will not be limited to just user-computer, but also computer-computer (Searles, 2012).  This change in the virtual assistants will make it Web 3.0 technology.
